One of the more enduring myths surrounding Sweden is that the people here are particularly suicidal. This rumour is often traced back to a speech given by US President Dwight D Eisenhower in the 1960s. While admittedly the long, dark winters can get you down, I wouldn’t say it’s so bad that I’d want to end it all.

Sweden is a country in Northern Europe. The Swedes are nordic people - descendants of the mighty Vikings. The Swedish Empire empire was one of the great powers of Europe in the 17th and 18th century. The collection of folktales from Sweden consists of one book with 28 folktales.

the most famend Swedish culinary tradition is the smörgåsbord and, at Christmas, the julbord, including well known Swedish dishes corresponding to gravlax 

Tomte is a Christmas gnome, who according to Swedish myth, lives on a farm or in the forest. Tomte looks a little like Santa Claus and hands out gifts to the family while saying funny rhymes. Nowadays, the westernized version of Christmas is quickly catching up to Sweden, and Tomte is beginning to lose his original identity and starting to look a lot like commercial Santa Claus figures.

Since 1959, at 3 pm on Christmas Eve, whole families in Sweden gather in front of TV to watch old Disney cartoons. Life stops to watch “Kalle Anka och hans vänner önskar God Jul” (“Donald Duck and his friends wish you a Merry Christmas”). Swedish folktales and fairy tales. The language of many of these tales is somewhat updated, and some of the legends are made shorter and made to look like fairy tales. It was when Jenny Nyström, a well-known Swedish artist of the 1880's, made her incredible popular Tomten-drawings, he became the main symbol of the Swedish Christmas.
